This study aims to understand the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbots in mathematics learning among students of the Mathematics Education Program at Universitas Muslim Maros. A qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, open-ended online questionnaires, and document observation. The results reveal that students utilize various AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Poe, depending on their specific strengths. ChatGPT is used for procedural explanations, Gemini for quick responses, Claude for reflective reasoning, and Poe for comparing outputs across models. These chatbots support students in completing tasks and understanding basic concepts, yet they exhibit limitations in explaining abstract concepts, formal proofs, and mathematical visualizations. Despite the benefits, ethical challenges emerge due to the absence of institutional guidelines. Thus, the use of AI chatbots in learning should be accompanied by strong digital literacy and ethical frameworks to serve as effective and responsible learning partners.
