Abstract

The livestock sector in Konda District, South Konawe Regency, plays a strategic role as a provider of animal protein and a pillar of the rural household economy through its biological savings function. This study aimed to analyze the structure of the cattle population by age and sex to evaluate prospects for future business sustainability. The research methodology used was a descriptive, quantitative approach, utilizing 2024 livestock inventory data from 17 villages/sub-districts in the Konda District. The variables analyzed included population size, sex composition, number of Livestock Households (RTP), and average livestock ownership. The results revealed that the total cattle population in Konda District reached 5,463 head. The population structure was dominated by adult cattle groups of 3,647 head (66.75%), exceeding the number of calves, which numbered 1,816 head (33.25%). By sex, adult female cattle were the most dominant group, accounting for 52.1% (2,845 head), while adult bulls accounted for only 14.7%. The sex ratio of adult cattle was recorded at 1:3.5, indicating an imbalance driven by the economic patterns of cattle breeders, who tend to sell bulls early to meet family financial needs. An analysis of cattle distribution in the area shows Lambusa Village as the largest contributor to the population (13.5%, or 687 head), while Puosu Jaya and Amohalo Villages have the lowest populations. The average cattle ownership per household (RTP) ranges from 4 to 9 head, indicating the dominance of small-scale livestock farming systems. However, the proportion of young cattle in the area, at 33.25%, indicates that the cattle population is well resilient to the risk of depopulation. It was concluded that Konda District has a stable reproductive potential thanks to a strong breeding base. However, optimizing feed management and animal health services, and implementing reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination, are needed to increase productivity and balance population distribution across regions in a sustainable manner.
