Through interviews with lecturers and students and classroom observations, this research observes interactions in learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) with a focus on teaching active and passive sentences. By applying the Miles and Huberman model analysis, this research found that teaching active and passive sentences in the ESP approach had a positive and significant impact on the development of various skills, including information sharing, communication, writing, conceptual understanding, critical thinking, as well as student participation and interaction skills, in the context of studying International Relations. This approach also creates a collaborative learning environment where students actively participate in discussions, interact with lecturers and fellow students, and share experiences and knowledge related to learning material. The results of this research consistently support the effectiveness of teaching active and passive sentences in the ESP approach in improving communication, writing, critical thinking skills, and student participation and interaction in the context of learning International Relations. The implications of this research can be the basis for developing curriculum and teaching methods that are more effective in enriching ESP learning for International Relations students.
2023-12-22T22:21:20+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://ejournals.umma.ac.id/index.php/seltics/article/view/2048 The Impact of Explicit Instruction on Teaching Vocabulary to Fourth-Grade Students 2023-12-23T13:19:21+07:00 Masrul Masrul masrulm25@gmail.com Bayu Hendro Wicaksono bayu_hw@umm.ac.id
This research aimed to discover the impact of explicit instruction on teaching vocabulary to students with vocabulary difficulties. This explicit instruction involves directly teaching vocabulary words, providing detailed definitions, and practicing using these words in the context of sentences. The participants were 95 fourth-grade students. Participants who scored under 40 on the vocabulary test were randomly assigned to the experimental or control classes. The experimental group receives explicit instruction, while the control group receives conventional teaching from a teacher in a whole group setting. The experiment was conducted twice a week during 20 learning sessions. A teacher taught The reference group the same vocabulary as the whole group. Based on the data analysis using a mixed-model (multi-level) Time Condition analysis, the results remarked the moderate effect of the intervention on students' vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. Besides, the experiment group could write better sentences using the vocabulary taught than the control group. Research implication was also discussed
2023-12-22T22:21:54+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://ejournals.umma.ac.id/index.php/seltics/article/view/2061 Measuring English Proficiency: Investigating How Teachers Employ Formative Tests 2023-12-23T13:19:21+07:00 Alfina Damayanti finaalfinadamayanti123@gmail.com Nuraeni Nuraeni nuraeni@umma.ac.id Novalia Tanasy novalia@umma.ac.id
Education holds a crucial role in human life, connecting the roles of teachers and students in teaching and evaluation. Assessment, a big part of education, helps teachers understand how well students are doing as they learn. When assessing students, teachers must consider how each student learns, what they're good at, what they find challenging, and what they need to succeed in school. So, teachers must know how to do assessments well. This study aims to determine the teacher's understanding of formative assessment and how to apply formative assessment to learning English in assessing students' English skills. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method using interviews and observations. 7 English teachers from different schools were interviewed (4 teachers at SMAN 3 Maros, 1 teacher at MA Darussalam Barandasi, and 2 English teachers at SMKN 1 Maros). Meanwhile, observations were carried out once at each school. The findings show that teachers use formative assessment at the beginning, middle, and end of learning sessions to understand students' performance. Teachers see many benefits in using formative assessments, like measuring individual abilities, reaching learning goals, and understanding student needs better. Some teachers face challenges, like figuring out how each student is different, which shows they might need more help and training. Classroom observations also show that some schools do well with formative assessments, while others have problems, such as SMK 1 Maros, which has issues with students not showing up and using home-based assignments. This study suggests giving teachers more support and training to improve assessments and learning for everyone.
2023-12-22T22:22:50+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://ejournals.umma.ac.id/index.php/seltics/article/view/2045 Analysis of the Quality of Teachers' Beliefs in English Language Teaching and Its Implementation in the Independent Curriculum 2023-12-23T13:19:21+07:00 Annisah Annisah annisahnukman@gmail.com Sholihin Sholihin annisahnukman@gmail.com Waliyudin Waliyudin waliyudinkhalik@gmail.com
This research aims to reveal the quality of teachers' beliefs in teaching English and its implementation in the curriculum in Bima Regency. The method used is descriptive qualitative and uses purposive sampling techniques. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with ten teachers from two different schools with questions about teacher experience, teaching experience, educational principles, and teacher personality, then analyzed by data reduction, display, conclusions, and verification. The research results show that: 1) the teacher has an educational background relevant to English subjects and strong motivation to choose an English education major. They also identify idols or role models in learning English. 2) The teachers' teaching experience, with most teachers having taught for more than five years, shows that they consider their main task to be educating, guiding, and providing information to students. Teachers also feel the most impressive experience is when their students succeed. 3) teachers remember the importance of knowledge about content, pedagogy, and students in the teaching process. 4) there is a lack of research and use of specific teaching methods, strategies, and approaches. 5) Implementing the new independent curriculum begins in classes X and XI, with efforts to measure student characteristics and potential, although teachers are still limited in designing open modules. This research concludes that teachers have strong confidence in teaching English, but there are still challenges in implementing the new curriculum.
2023-12-22T22:23:16+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://ejournals.umma.ac.id/index.php/seltics/article/view/2049 Language Constrain in Academic Writing in The Form of Thesis For Students of Letters Faculty of Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar 2023-12-23T13:19:22+07:00 Kaharuddin Nemba kaharuddin.fs@umi.ac.id
This research aims to describe the students’ dominant influence in writing their thesis and the factors they faced in writing their thesis. This study aims to determine whether the reading-aloud method affects students' ability to read Q.S Al-Ma'un of the Quran and its English translation in the second semester of the Management Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Pringsewu. This study employs a quasi-experimental methodology. The results showed that the experimental class's post-test score was 69.1, with a standard deviation of 8.22, and the practical class's pre-test score was 56.5, with a standard deviation of 8.53. The control class's post-test score was 60.40, with a standard deviation 9.68. The outcomes of the two tests are dissimilar. Additionally, both classes’-test results are 0.00. This indicates that the hypothesis is correct and that the reading-aloud strategy can help students become more proficient readers.
2023-12-22T22:24:24+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://ejournals.umma.ac.id/index.php/seltics/article/view/2040 The Correlation Between English Learners’ Motivation and Speaking Achievement 2023-12-23T13:19:22+07:00 Haspia Latauga haspialatauga@gmail.com Isnaeni Wahab isnaeni@umma.ac.id Nurul Fachrunnisa nurulfachrunnisa@umma.ac.id
This research aims to determine the correlation between English learners’ motivation and speaking achievement due to the lack of student motivation, particularly in speaking skills that affect the speaking score. The samples of this study were 19 students taken from the second semester of the English Department at the Muslim University of Maros. The method used was mixed methods with correlational technique. Quantitative data was collected by distributing questionnaires to students using Gardner's Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) indicators and the speaking scores taken from the speaking lecturer. Then, qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews. In analyzing quantitative data, questionnaires assessed by Likert Scale and speaking scores were analyzed using SPSS, while the qualitative data used Miles and Huberman analysis. The quantitative data results indicate a correlation between the motivation of English learners and speaking achievement, with a score of 0.672. It is considered that the higher the motivation in learning speaking, the better the speaking achievement the students achieve. Students with high motivation will try to follow the learning process intensively compared to those with less motivation. Furthermore, students' extrinsic and intrinsic motivation were analyzed by looking at the AMTB’s Gardner and the results of the interview as well. The data results indicated that students show extrinsic motivation more than intrinsic motivation in their speaking achievement.
2023-12-22T22:24:56+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://ejournals.umma.ac.id/index.php/seltics/article/view/2059 The Integration of Islamic Values in English Classroom in Integrated Islamic School in Mataram Viewed From Teaching Instruments 2023-12-23T13:19:22+07:00 Imansyah Imansyah imansyah@undikma.ac.id I Made Permadi Utama permadi_utama@undikma.ac.id
This research was designed as descriptive qualitative research and aimed at figuring out whether or not the Islamic values were integrated with the lesson plan and the syllabus teachers designed. It is essential to see if these values are integrated, considering that JSIT mandates all Islamic schools to incorporate them in all subjects at all levels. The research took place in Mataram, taking English teachers and schools’ curriculum vice principals in four different Islamic integrated schools spread in Mataram as the subjects. Data was collected through document study and interviews. A document study was conducted to see if the Islamic values were added to the indicators and the teaching procedures teachers designed in both the lesson plan and syllabus. A semi-structured interview was carried out with 4 English teachers and 4 curriculum vice principals who were purposively chosen to get more in-depth and comprehensive information on the lesson plan and syllabus they designed. This research suggested that one school successfully implemented integration among the four integrated Islamic schools. This is seen in their indicators and the teaching procedures that reflect Islamic values. The three schools were yet to implement the integration properly as they considered prayers before and after the lesson and some advice during the lesson as the integration.
2023-12-22T22:25:29+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement##
